Antonio Garcia Collection of Native American Music of New Mexico and Mexico

Abstract This collection of sound recordings was donated to the John Donald Robb Archive of Southwestern Music by Antonio Garcia. The music is mainly from San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico, with a few songs of the Huichol of Mexico. In addition, several songs are from the Iroquois and one is from the Ojibwa or Chippewa Tribe.

Abstract This collection of sound recordings was donated to the John Donald Robb Archive of Southwestern Music by the Music Department of the University of New Mexico. It consisted of three reels of pre-1963 commercial recordings of Native American music from Mexico and the Southwestern United States, which have been reformatted to CD.

Scope and Content This collection contains 36 sound tapes of ceremonial dances recorded in the field during the 44th Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, held in Gallup, N.M., August 12-15, 1965. The tapes contain music from Native American peoples from Mexico and across the United States, including the Southwest, Plains, Pacific Coast and Southeast.
